Acheen Street Malay Mosque

Acheen Street Malay Mosque (Masjid Melayu Lebuh Acheh) is a historic mosque in George Town’s UNESCO Heritage Zone. Founded in 1808 by Tengku Syed Hussain Al-Aidid, an Arab merchant from Acheh, it reflects Penang's early Islamic and trade ties with the Middle East.

From Fifth Avenue Hotel Penang, walk north on Lebuh Macallum, turn left onto Lebuh Carnarvon, then right onto Lebuh Acheh. The mosque is on your right. The 900-metre walk takes 10–12 minutes. By car, it is under 5 minutes.

The mosque blends Malay and Middle Eastern styles and features a notable minaret and peaceful courtyard. It remains an active place of worship, so visitors should dress modestly (cover shoulders and knees), remove shoes before entering, and avoid prayer times. There is no entrance fee. It is open daily; mornings or early evenings are best for visits. Avoid Fridays at noon. Photography is permitted outside; ask permission before taking pictures indoors.
