Hidden Gems
Balik Pulau (Durian Farms & Countryside)
Nestled in the western hills of Penang Island, Balik Pulau offers a peaceful countryside escape with lush rice fields, fruit orchards, and traditional kampung life. It is especially famous for its durian farms.
The drive from Fifth Avenue Hotel Penang covers about 25 km and takes 40–50 minutes via Jalan Paya Terubong or Jalan Tun Sardon, both offering scenic views. Driving or e-hailing is recommended.
Key activities include durian tasting (season runs May–August, peak in June–July), cycling through rural landscapes, and experiencing local homestays. Wear closed-toe shoes, sun protection, and bring insect repellent. Mornings on weekdays are the best time to visit.
There is no general entrance fee. Durian farm visits operate on a pay-per-fruit or tour basis. Bicycle rentals and homestays are available locally.
