Heritage & Culture

Fort Cornwallis

Fort Cornwallis is a historic British fort in George Town, built in 1786. It is the largest standing fort in Malaysia and features cannons, colonial structures, and open grounds.

Located along the Esplanade, it is a 10-minute drive or a pleasant walk from Fifth Avenue Hotel Penang.

Highlights include the Seri Rambai cannon, historical exhibits, and scenic ramparts. Wear comfortable shoes and sun protection as shade is limited. Weekday mornings (9–11 AM) are ideal to avoid crowds and heat.

An entrance fee applies. Guided tours are available for a more in-depth experience. The fort is also a venue for occasional cultural events.
