Heritage & Culture

George Town UNESCO World Heritage Site

George Town is the historic capital of Penang and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, celebrated for its unique blend of colonial architecture, vibrant street art, and multicultural heritage. Its well-preserved streetscapes offer a living record of its history as a trading port.

The city is easily explored on foot or by bicycle from most central hotels, including the Fifth Avenue Hotel Penang.

Key attractions include its famous street art, particularly the murals and iron sculptures along Armenian Street and nearby lanes, as well as historic clan houses like Khoo Kongsi and cultural sites along Harmony Street. The George Town Festival in July and August highlights local arts and culture.

There is no fee to explore the public areas and street art. Some historic buildings charge admission. Mornings and evenings are the best times to avoid heat and crowds. Comfortable walking shoes, sun protection, and staying hydrated are recommended.
