Penang War Museum
Penang War Museum is a historic fortress on Bukit Batu Maung, originally built by the British in the 1930s and later used by Japanese forces during WWII. It is now Southeast Asia’s largest war museum.
The drive from Fifth Avenue Hotel Penang takes about 40 minutes via the Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway toward Batu Maung.
Highlights include underground tunnels, artillery batteries, and wartime exhibits. Guided tours in English and Malay are available hourly (9:30 AM–3:30 PM). The terrain is steep and uneven; wear sturdy shoes and bring a torch. Some areas may not be suitable for young children.
Open daily. Admission: RM35 adults, RM17 children (6–12) and seniors. Mornings (9 AM–12 PM) are best to avoid heat and crowds. Allow 2–3 hours. Night tours require pre-booking. Photography is permitted except in designated solemn areas.
