Religious Sites
Sri Mahamariamman Temple
Sri Mahamariamman Temple is the oldest Hindu temple in Penang, established in 1833. Known for its vibrant Dravidian architecture and five-tiered gopuram (tower), it is a key cultural and spiritual site in George Town.
Located on Queen Street, a 15-minute drive from Fifth Avenue Hotel Penang.
Highlights include the intricately carved deities on the gopuram, the main sanctum dedicated to Goddess Mariamman, and the peaceful inner courtyard. Modest dress is required (shoulders and knees covered); sarongs are available at the entrance.
Open daily. No entrance fee, but donations are appreciated. Mornings (6–9 AM) are ideal for observing rituals and avoiding crowds. Photography is permitted without flash. Avoid visiting during active ceremonies unless observing respectfully. Major festivals like Thaipusam (Jan/Feb) are especially vibrant but very crowded.
