Sun Yat-sen Museum
Explore Sun Yat-sen Museum, Dr. Sun’s pivotal 1911 revolutionary base featuring historic exhibits and overseas Chinese legacy in Armenian Street, George Town.
The Sun Yat-sen Museum is located just a five-minute drive or a fifteen-minute walk from Fifth Avenue Hotel Penang. Head southeast along Jalan Penang, then turn left onto Lebuh Armenian, where the museum stands prominently at No. 120. This accessible route places you directly within George Town’s UNESCO Heritage Zone, making it an ideal cultural stop during a walking tour of the area.
Tucked within a classic Straits Chinese shophouse, the museum offers a compelling window into one of the most pivotal movements in modern Chinese history. It was here that Dr. Sun Yat-sen planned the 1911 Xinhai Revolution, an uprising that would ultimately bring an end to China’s imperial rule. The house served not only as his temporary residence but also as the Penang headquarters for the revolutionary movement, where strategy meetings were held and funding from the overseas Chinese community was secured.
Inside the museum, visitors can follow a chronological narrative through galleries filled with historical documents, rare photographs, period furnishings and informative displays. Highlights include the preserved study-bedroom where Dr. Sun worked, as well as the meeting room where the revolutionary "Penang Conference" took place in 1910. The original printing area, once used to publish revolutionary materials, adds authenticity and depth to the experience.
